Bouchra Khalili. Entre círculos y constelaciones / Between Circles and Constellations

Next Thursday, September 14 at 8:00 pm at ADN Galeria, Elvira Dyangani Ose and Bouchra Khalili will talk about central themes in the artist's work, coinciding with the presentation of this new publication and her current exhibition Fanning the Spark of Hope in the Past.

This publication accompanies the exhibition of the same title co-produced by MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and Sharjah Art Foundation of the United Arab Emirates. The book brings together projects that this French-Moroccan artist has produced over the last ten years, among them films, video installations, photographs and documentary material. The publication also includes documentation related to The Circle (2023), a video installation that examines and reactivates the legacy of the Movement of Arab Workers in France in the 1970s and which received its European premiere during the exhibition at MACBA.

The publication Nancy Holt / Dentro Fuera accompanies the exhibition coproduced by MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and the Bildmuseet at Umeå University, the most extensive survey of this American artist’s practice to be shown in Europe to date and featuring an ambitious presentation of her multifaceted body of work.

As a pioneer in site-specific installations and the moving image, Nancy Holt (1938–2014) expanded the spaces where art can be found by embracing the most modern media of her time and she questioned the way we understand the nature of our place in the world.

The artist’s book A Leaf Shapes the Eye looks back at twenty-five years of work by Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, from his earliest sculptures in 1997 to his installations of 2022.

Illustrated by hundreds of images, the book chronologically charts the development of Steegmann’s oeuvre from his first steps as an artist to the present-day in the centre pages, at which point it immediately embarks on a return journey, presenting new details and points of view of the works before arriving back at his earliest pieces. In its structure, the book thus forms a closed cycle that can be started anew.

The Glossary of Common Knowledge (GCK) is the first volume (volume two was published in 2022) of a compilation of art terminology that differs substantially from what is found in the existing literature on art, and constitutes a five-year research project conducted by Moderna galerija (MG+MSUM), in the framework of L'Internationale's programme "The Uses of Art".

In collaboration with institutions and individuals from Europe and other parts of the world, 66 contributors/narrators proposed terms relating to their own practices and contexts, to historical references, political or social situations, or L'Internationale projects.

Glossary of common knowledge. Vol. 2

The terms by more than fifty narrators presented in this volume were discussed and written between 2019 and 2022 during seminar meetings to bring together diverse knowledges from the museums as well as the so-called global family of artists, thinkers and curators. They seek to find common knowledge to speak about less visible stories in contemporary art and to address systems that govern our ways of thinking in art and beyond. The project has been ongoing since 2014, and it was conceived and curated by Zdenka Badovinac, Bojana Piškur and Jesús Carrillo in the context of L’Internationale confederation ofmuseums as a method of addressing the so-called referential fields.

Time To Listen, Space To Experiment: Perspectives from Re-Imagine Europe 2017-2021

This book highlights the legacy and the outcomes of the 4-year Re-Imagine Europe programme. It contains in-depth interviews with a selection of artists who were commissioned to make new works, such as Jennifer Walshe, AM Kanngieser, Nikima Jagudajev, Barby Asante, BJ Nilsen, Marja Ahti and Kali Malone next to essays, reflections and visual contributions on works and projects such as WIWMAVGAIWLDSAATCWA, The Informals, Persuasion Lab, Steal This Poster, MOTHA, sound workshops and more. The book starts with a conversation between Anna Ramos, Lucas van der Velden and François Bonnet about the importance of experimentation in the arts, and how such experiments can be relevant for society.

Re-Imagine Europe (2017-2021) was a four-year project involving ten cultural organisations from across Europe, responding to the social and political challenges in Europe. With a programme of residencies, commissions, symposia, and workshops, the project partners stimulated both artistic production and audience development. They experimented with new ways of reaching out to their audiences, motivated by the ambition to develop a broader and more engaging approach to audience development.

The Manual is a tool that gives visitors insights into the museum from a number of perspectives. It aims to provide keys that make it possible to understand the issues the MACBA talks about and the aspects that define it, thereby ensuring it is accessible to everyone.

The publication includes a selection of important works by 120 artists in the MACBA Collection, as well as a compendium of 52 concepts crucial to understanding the narratives that shape the museum. As a result, the works and concepts comprehensively articulate the various lines of thinking present in the museum.

This is a collective endeavour in which 51 authors have participated, 39 of them members of the museum’s staff, while the rest are regular collaborators.

Pedagogías y emancipación

Educate, for what? This question is particularly relevant at a time when education appears under threat from the labour market and its demands for productivity and efficiency. The essays in this publication critique the educational models imposed on us with little opportunity for alternatives. Drawing on diverse experiences and perspectives, each of these contributions supports the idea of education as a political space for individual and collective emancipation. An area and a practice from which we are allowed to imagine a future.

Estética fósil. Imaginarios de la energía y crisis ecosocial

This book addresses the way in which the use of fossil fuels as a primary source of energy during the Industrial Revolution, and the development of thermodynamic physics in the mid-nineteenth century, were accompanied by a series of cultural imaginaries that led to a productivist worldview in the relationship between humanity and nature. The energetic exuberance provided by the synthesis between coal and thermodynamic machines would guarantee the increase of social wealth, avoiding the repercussions of the new industrial capitalism on the physical wellbeing of the workers and on terrestrial ecosystems. The ‘fossil aesthetic’ that gives its title to the essay refers to the fact that the impact of this worldview is not only related to a series of ideological discourses, but has been sensibly inscribed in our experience of reality through the diffusion of a certain image of the cosmos. The book describes the effect that the imaginaries of fossils and energy have had, over the last two centuries, on various scientific disciplines and cultural practices, while critically challenging their validity in the context of neoliberalism and the ongoing eco-social crisis.

Amor y revolución (Kollontai)

All revolutions bring radical change into society and generate new perspectives on relationships: other ways of loving and of approaching knowledge become possible. Amor y revolución (Kollontai) [Love and Revolution (Kollontai)] is a selection of texts by Alexandra Kollontai (Saint Petersburg, 1872 – Moscow, 1952), a Marxist feminist who was a key figure of the Russian Revolution and a Soviet diplomat. The book also includes other authors who, based on the contributions of the Russian writer, have traced her legacy in artistic trends that defied the logics of love and knowledge during their time, in order to construct an alternative genealogy of the aesthetic and political avant-gardes.

With texts by Dora García, Rina Ortiz and Andrea Valdés, as well as Margherita Fabbri, Lila Lisenberg and Pol Guasch, members of Amor Rojo, a research group of MACBA’s Independent Studies Programme (PEI), 2019–20.

This publication is the result of a collaboration between the participants of the course ‘The Fragmented Body. A genealogy of Spanish art of the 1990s’, directed by Imma Prieto, independent curator, art critic and lecturer in contemporary art, and organised by MACBA during March-April 2019.

The aim of the course was to rethink the construction of the stories that allow us to write history from another place, by positioning ourselves in the new imaginaries that, in the 1990s, expanded the way we think about the different bodies: fragmented, social, political, technological, silenced or constructed. Based on these categories, and acting not only as witnesses but also as participants of that era, Marcel·lí Antúnez, Xabier Arakistain, Eva González-Sancho, Rogelio López Cuenca and María Ruido deliberated freely about the questions they deemed most relevant in the course.

The result is a free-format publication, printed in risography. The textual and graphic materials have not been edited or undergone any corrections. The sequence in the final maquette of the book was decided during two sessions between the authors; Imma Prieto, director of the course; the Museum team; and Do the Print, responsible for the final design. The publication is also available in PDF format and can be downloaded freely from MACBA’s website.
