MACBA proudly presents a conversation between Elvira Dyangani Ose, Director of MACBA, and New York City-based curator and writer Legacy Russell, the theorist behind Glitch Feminism, a new cultural manifesto for cyberfeminism, which finds possibilities for liberation in the fissures between gender, technology and the body.
A glitch is normally thought of as an error, a superficial blemish. However, Russell invites us to embrace the causality of “error”, acknowledging that a glitch in a social system marked by economic, racial and sexual stratification —processes that continue to enact violence on all bodies— may not be an “error” at all, but rather a much-needed erratum.
Glitch Feminism posits: “One is not born, but rather becomes, a body.” The digital is explored as a vessel through which we can reprogram binary gender coding. For Russell, a “glitch” is a means of renegotiating and subverting normative categories of sexuality, race, and gender. The “glitch” corrects the machine.
This conversation between Legacy Russell and MACBA’s Director, Elvira Dyangani Ose, will explore the relationship between technology and identity, as well as Russell’s curatorial work as Executive Director and Chief Curator of The Kitchen, in New York City.
