Let’s talk about… Josep Grau-Garriga
The territory of emotions
Textiles as an artistic element depository of emotional content
in progress
Coinciding with the inauguration of the presentation of Josep Grau-Garriga. Dialogue of light, Joël Andrianomearisoa talks with Esther Grau, Grau-Garriga’s daughter, about the meaning and space in which textiles are used in the work of both artists.
The use of this medium in contemporary art has very diverse intentions, starting points, formulations, contents and results, and this use can be interpreted and analysed from different perspectives. The textile element however, always contains a sensory aspect that connects with the living experience.
The works of Josep Grau-Garriga and Joël Andrianomearisoa were exhibited together for the first time at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, during the biennial held there in 2020. This coincidence, sparked by the current exhibition Josep le monde et moi by Joël Andrianomearisoa at the Center Grau-Garriga d’Art Tèxtil Contemporani, suggested a transversal aspect in the work of both artists: the habitual use of textile elements loaded with emotional content.
From the perspective of their own languages and codes, Andrianomearisoa and Grau-Garriga come together in representing fabric within their work as a sign of personal and collective experience. This initial and essential parallelism is inscribed in different generational and cultural contexts. It has also been developed in their artistic creations in a personal and unique way throughout their careers.
