Born in Vienna in 1940, Eva Lootz studied Fine Art, Musicology, Cinema and Philosophy. In 1967 she moved to Madrid where she became one of the leading figures in Spanish sculpture of the second half of the twentieth century and the early 2000s. Matter and language are the key subjects of a body of work that includes installations and sculpture, as well as photography and video. While in her early works Lootz used materials such as cotton, earth and seeds, she later became interested on the sites of extraction and processing of minerals and raw materials, their exchange routes and the socio-cultural effects they provoke by leaving an imprint on the landscape and language. Matter, ecology, territory and gender are, therefore, some of the main concepts underlying her work. Since 1973, Lootz has exhibited in several European cities. Major exhibitions include: Sala Montcada, Fundació Caixa de Pensions, Barcelona (1987); Tinglado, Tarragona (1991); Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, Palma de Mallorca (1996); Palacio de Cristal, Madrid (2002); Fundació Sa Nostra, Palma de Mallorca (2004); and Tabacalera, Madrid (2016), as well as various galleries in Amsterdam, London, Sweden, Denmark and New York. She is the author of books on art, and her work is included in the collections of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid; Chase Manhattan Bank, New York; Fundación Juan March, Palma de Mallorca; Artium Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo, Vitoria-Gasteiz; and MACBA, Barcelona.
