Frederic Amat nació en 1952 en Barcelona, ciudad donde vive y trabaja. Formado en arquitectura, y también en escenografía con Fabià Puigserver, entiende y practica la pintura como un medio poroso que transita por múltiples disciplinas. Su producción pictórica, que comenzó en los años setenta, pone en diálogo elementos objetuales con un trabajo matérico que a menudo remite a símbolos y a un contexto de misterio. Además de su producción propiamente pictórica, desde mediados de los años ochenta, Amat ha realizado escenografías para danza y teatro a partir de textos de autores literarios como García Lorca, Samuel Beckett, Juan Goytisolo, Bernard-Marie Koltès y Octavio Paz, entre otros. También ha creado espacios escénicos para ópera y oratorios, ha ilustrado obras literarias como Las mil y una noches o La Odisea y ha dirigido proyectos cinematográficos como Viaje a la luna (1998) y Foc al càntir (2000). Sus intervenciones en espacios arquitectónicos, ya sean naturales o urbanos, combinan pintura, escultura y cerámica.
