James Coleman was born in Ballaghadereen, Ireland, in 1941. After completing his studies at the National College of Art and Design and at University College in Dublin, he travelled to Paris, London, and Milan, where he settled for twenty years. He currently lives and works in Ireland, and has become one of the leading Irish contemporary artists. Coleman has gradually developed his own genre over the past thirty years: a mix of installation and theatre performance, video and work with artists, and critical references to the language of mass culture. He uses slide projections with synchronised audio, and his use of video has grown over the years. His work can be found in the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Paris, among others.
