Having studied Visual Arts at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, Mexico City, and at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, Antonio Vega Macotela currently lives and works in Mexico City. His multidisciplinary work is designed to be carried out in very specific contexts and with the participation of communities, such as prisoners, miners, indigenous collectives and hackers. He explores the notions of work, value, exchange, alienation and class using art as a tool for social transformation and the re-signification of everyday life. He is interested in co-creative processes, interactions and negotiations as applied to artistic production as well as labour. With pronounced ethical implications, he often addresses and denounces the exchange between corporate and state power. He has participated in the biennials of Istanbul (2014), Taipei (2020) and Sâo Paulo (2021), Manifesta, Ghent (2012), Documenta, Kassel (2017) and Highline Art, New York (2021). In addition to participating in collective exhibitions in prominent spaces such as Witte de With Contemporary Art Center, Rotterdam (2015), Museo Amparo de Puebla, Mexico (2017), Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2018), Palais de Tokyo, Paris ( 2022) and Centre Pompidou-Metz (2021), he has held solo exhibitions at the LABOR space in Mexico City (2022 and 2015).
