Born in communist Yugoslavia, Katarina Zdjelar currently lives and works between Rotterdam and Belgrade. After graduating from the Belgrade University of Arts, she furthered her studies at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, and the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. Her audiovisual works focus on the performative capacities of speech, with special attention to the limits of language, its vulnerability and malleability. Zdjelar's videos trace the ideological imaginary of a global, accelerated and changing present, denouncing the traps and silences of dominant ideologies and promoting notions such as bond, collective struggle, resistance and community. She works with moving images, sound, performance and book projects, as well as creating platforms for speculation and exchange.  Zdjelar represented Serbia at the Venice Biennale (2009) and has had solo exhibitions in venues such as Centrum Beeldende Kunst, Rotterdam (2009), Center for Contemporary Arts Celje, Slovenia (2011), Artium, Vitoria-Gasteiz (2013), Kunstverein Bielefeld, Germany (2014); Museum Sztuki, Lodz (2016), Kunsthal, Rotterdam (2017) and the Oregon Center for Contemporary Art (2021). She has also participated in the Marrakesh Biennial (2014) and the Yokohama Triennial (2017).
