Magdalena Jitrik was born in 1963 in Buenos Aires, the city where she both lives and works. Between 1974 and 1987, due to the difficult political situation in her country, she relocated to Mexico, where she studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas. In her geometric abstraction, she unites or links the tradition of Malevich and Kandinsky with that of Native American cultures and peoples. According to the artist, geometry is the universal vehicle that allows her to fuse these supposedly disparate traditions. In her pictorial work, Jitrik often incorporates messages from the modern revolutionary tradition that refer to historical facts. Her exhibitions include the Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo (2014); Fundación Universidad Di Tella, Buenos Aires (2013); Manifesta 9, Ghent, Belgium (2012); Ignacio Liprandi Gallery, London (2012); and Museo Castagnino, Santa Fe, Argentina (2012). Her work is included in the collections of Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Rosario, Argentina; FRAC-Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Marseille; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; and MACBA, Barcelona.
