Women in Revolt!

MACBA at Tate Britain

MACBA is present at the exhibition on feminism, art and activism, currently at Tate Britain, London, where it will run until April 2024. Entitled Women in Revolt! Art and Activism in the UK 1970–1990, it is a survey of the work of established women artists, together with others who were left out of the mainstream narrative.

Working individually or in collective networks, they transformed British culture in the 1970s and 1980s, paving the way for future generations of artists. Women’s Lib, the fight for legal changes, punk, the peace movement, the visibility of Black and South Asian women artists and an understanding of the body as politics are key aspects of the exhibition. MACBA participates with the loan of Beyond the Family Album, by Jo Spence, an important figure in the debates on photography, the critique of representation and feminism in the seventies and eighties. Spence was a pioneer in exposing how family life, supposedly private, is also the result of a social construct. Her revision of the family album cannily links the myths of privacy to a collective narrative. Discover her work by exploring the Collection.
