MACBA Library Loan Conditions

The loan service of the MACBA Research and Documentation Centre Library (CED) is free and open to anyone interested in contemporary art who accepts the following conditions.

To be able to use the loan service it is necessary to:

    Apply for the CED card through the registration form on the MACBA website and collect it in person at the Library desk on floor 3 of the CED.

    If you already have a CED card dating from before 21 May 2024, you should renew it through the update form on the MACBA website
  • 03
    Accept the present loan conditions through the registration form or the CED card update form. 
  • 04
    Be 16 years of age or older.

Hours and location of the loan service: Monday to Thursday from 10am to 6.45pm. The loan procedure and the return of loaned items must be completed at the Library desk on floor 3 of the CED. 
  • Loan duration: 21 calendar days per item. 
  • Maximum number of items that can be loaned at any one time: 3 items. 
Renewals: loans can be renewed once (for 21 additional days). The loan can be renewed during the 7 days prior to its due return date, either by identifying yourself in the personal space in the online catalogue, by sending an email to biblioteca@macba.cat or in person at the Library desk. If the item has been reserved by another person, it cannot be renewed and must be returned by the due date.  The CED card and its use for the loan service is personal and non-transferable.  Personal data must be kept current through the CED card update form available on the MACBA website.  The borrower is responsible for the conservation of the item and for returning it in the condition it was received, and for complying with the regulations for the protection of intellectual property regarding the use of third-party works.

Publications after 1995 that do not fall within the exceptions described in the typology of items unavailable for loan.

  • Documents that are difficult to replace 
  • Audiovisual and sound recordings 
  • Publications from the Reserved Section of the Library 
  • Publications from personal fonds (Joan Brossa Fond, Joan-Josep Tharrats Fond, Xavier Miserachs Fond, among others) 
  • Publications about artists in the MACBA Collection that are not duplicated in the Library 
  • Documentary collections with dissemination materials and press dossiers 
  • Magazines 
  • Doctoral theses and other unpublished research works 
  • MACBA’s Archive materials

To find out the loan conditions for each item, you must identify yourself in the personal space of the catalogue at biblioteca.macba.cat, or enquire via email at biblioteca@macba.cat or at the Library desk.  Please note that availability and conditions may vary depending on the state of conservation of the item and other factors to be assessed by the Library team.

Penalties
Failure to comply with the loan conditions will result in the temporary blocking of the service. The loan service will be reactivated once any outstanding items are returned. Return of items outstanding for 100 days will result in indefinite suspension/termination of the loan service.  People whose card has been blocked will be unable to renew any of the items they have on loan.  MACBA reserves the right to take legal action against sanctioned persons.
