Candy Shop is best known as a dirty rap hit by 50 Cent.

Candy Shop - the Circus is a performance reworking the games of power that are embedded in the rap songs into lullabies, narrating the story about beauty, gender and the mundane.

Candy Shop - the Circus is an opera for 7 female performers, men choir, female drummer, a marching band, a combination of hip-hop texts, electronics and video that invites for a collective meditation on power hierarchies.

Lina Lapelyte - Candy Shop - the Circus

PERFORMERS
Lina Lapelyte is an artist and musician living and working in London and Vilnius. Her performance-based practice is rooted in music and flirts with pop culture, gender stereotypes, aging and nostalgia.

Lina explores contemporary forms of performativity that are related to rituals of folk, popular music and opera. Her works are fueled by expression, marked by pastiche and grotesque, contextual and conceptual musicality, theatrical suggestibility, stylized visuality.

Her latest performances Ladies (2015), Hunky Bluff (2014) and collaborative opera Have a Good Day! were shown in different contexts and locations including the Serpentine Pavilion in London, the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and the Venice Architecture Biennial (Venice/Italy).

Anat-Ben David is a London based sound, performance and visual artist, her work deals with the relationship between different elements occurring in one event where text, sound and digital image are mediated through improvisation and performance. Since 2003 she is a member of Chicks On Speed. Her newest work opera Kairos was featured at the Stenley Picker gallery, London and V&A museum, London.

Nouria Bah moved to London from the U.S. in 2012 to complete a Master’s degree in Anthropology at school of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. In addition to taking part in Candy Shop, she makes folk, jazz and hip-hop influenced songs on ukulele and loop-pedal.

Heidi Heidelberg is the singing and guitar playing half of flute and voice/guitar duo Bitch ‘n’ Monkas well asa diverse solo artist and composer, collaborating with anyone from experimental videoartists to jazz trios.

Rebecca La Horrox is a UK based visual artist, composer and performer, whose work encompasses projects across sculpting, music, dance and installation. She realizes her compositions through visual performance, music and sound conjured directly and indirectly through voice, body or object kinesthesis.

Sharon Gal is cross-disciplinary artist, performer and musician. Her practice includes free improvisation with vocals and electronics, collaborative group and site specific performances, field recordings and radio broadcasts.

Federico Vladimir Strate Pezdirc (b. Buenos Aires, 1983) is a documentary artist and filmmaker. In the form of installation or film, his work consists of building frames for objects, texts and images that entwine and create a narrative in which the personal and the documentary footage fill in the blank spaces of fiction. His films have been screened at the Pompidou Centre in the Documentary Film Festival Cinéma du Réel and have won several awards, including the Auditorio de Galicia Young Artists award and INJUVE.
