Joan Ponç

Head
1981
In the early eighties, the demonic faces and distorted figures of Joan Ponç evoked the same visionary, caustic and clever world that opened up in the late forties, when he founded with Joan Brossa, Modest Cuixart, Arnau Puig, Antoni Tàpies and Joan-Josep Tharrats the Dau al Set group and the magazine of the same name. Already then, his fantastic and disturbing symbols mixed with an iconography of religious reminiscences, his expressionistic images and the bright colours of his dismembered figures were one of the most original attempts of artistic renewal in the years following the Spanish Civil War.---Asymmetry, distortion, humanism and magic, reflected the human condition in the works of a painter who claimed to work intuitively. His attention to detail and the dream nature of his world are close to Magic Surrealism.
