This film was made between November 1973 and January 1974 and based on the original copy of Analyse d’une Peinture, with additional material made up of photographs taken by the artist of yachts at sea in the port of Ostend. The film is presented as a book, with one page for the general title and page headings on each take or set of sequences: “Page 1”, “ Page 2”, and so on. Slides were made in preparation for the book, and the film itself is presented as a slide show, being composed of nothing more than simple takes, with no action or camera movements. In 1973, Broodthaers prepared a slide show titled Bateau Tableau to be projected alongside the film, but this would never be seen to fruition in the artist’s lifetime. The film was premiered at the headquarters of the Petersburg Press, Portobello Road, London on 28 January 1974, during the inauguration of an exhibition organised to celebrate publication of Broodthaers’ book of the same title. The painting was also placed on display. Petersburg Press produced a numbered edition of 100 copies signed by the artist, distributed in a simple bluish-grey box which contained the book and the film. A previous mock-up of the book had proposed two volumes, entitled Analyse d’une Peinture. Marcel Broodthaers, Cinéma. Barcelona: Fundació Antoni Tàpies, 1997.
