Gordon Matta-Clark
Splitting
Splitting
1974
Gordon Matta-Clark wanted to record the failure of the seventies’ social and urban policies in New York City. His Building Cuts assume a critical look at the logic of capitalism by opening a reflection on speculation, private property and the privacy of individuals. In Splitting (1974), the artist cut in half a middleclass detached house in a typical American suburb, while in Conical Intersect (1975), this time in Europe, he cut several concentric circles in the walls of a building slated for demolition in the well-known Les Halles district of Paris.
