Pantheon Buzludja I. Series: "Amnesia"
2010
In 1961, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Bulgaria, four monuments were commissioned in the mountainous area of Buzludja. Three of them were inaugurated that same year. The fourth, by the architect Georgi Stoilov, was built, with the participation of 6,000 people, between 1974 and 1981. It needed to incorporate a large interior space for special events and, above all, it had to celebrate the party. Stoilov projected a raised body in the form of a plate – the circular shape symbolising infinity, the eternal glory for which communism strove – with a tower on the side topped with a star. It is one of the 150 monuments documented by photographer Kristina Kostadinova in the Amnesia series that were built between 1945 and 1989 by the Communist Party of Bulgaria, and which today are abandoned and unmaintained. The majesty, dimensions and solidity of the materials offer no protection against invisibility. What was once the image of a monolithic power, today is a lost, soulless spectre without any future.
