Mircea Cantor
Chaplet
Crown
2007
Chaplet is an ephemeral installation made with the artist's fingerprints. Evoking biometric border controls in a world obsessed with population control, Mircea Cantor dipped his fingers in black ink to print a line directly on the wall, to which he occasionally draws a cross or barb. The reference to barbed wire is immediately obvious, as is the allusion to the massive human displacement imposed by the feudal laws of a global economy. While the title of the work seems to allude to a crown, garland or rosary, the arrangement of the fingerprints in the space refutes any possibility of dialogue. Raised in Romania during Soviet times, Cantor's proposals continue to address today's world, through the use of a ‘poor’ aesthetic and economy of means. As he has repeated on more than one occasion, it is about ‘talking about poetry through politics’.
