Statement

Statement
At MACBA, we want to express our consternation at the devastating events unfolding in the Gaza Strip. We join the call for an immediate ceasefire, the opening of humanitarian corridors, and the release of hostages. We mourn the deaths on both sides of the Gazan border and want to express our solidarity with the pain of all victims. Nothing justifies the killing or kidnapping of innocent civilians. Nothing justifies the bombing of hospitals, schools, mosques, homes and families. Nothing justifies the dehumanisation and devaluation of life that we are witnessing.

We are deeply concerned with the attempts at silencing those voices, within the international art community, which defend the Palestinian people’s right to live. Consistent with the critique of a colonial past, we cannot and should not ignore the colonial violence of the present. It is our duty to work against any form of racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Consequently, we second the words of Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and his call for the strengthening of peace and the dignity of all peoples.
