Song for Many Movements: Scenes of Collective Creation & [contra]panorama

MACBA presents two new projects
Views from the exhibition
MACBA’s 2024 programme aims to recognise the role of art in social transformation, focusing on people and their ways of collective action and altering the museum’s customary modes of operation. With this goal in mind, it is inaugurating two projects: Song for Many Movements. Scenes for Collective Creation, curated by María Berríos, Director of Conservation and Research, and Sabel Gavaldon, Head of Programmes at MACBA, and [contra]panorama, curated by MACBA’s Alicia Escobio (Public Programmes), Yolanda Jolis (Head of Education), Anna Ramos (Web Radio) and Isaac Sanjuan (Education), together with the philosopher Yaiza Hernandez (Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths).

First, Song for Many Movements. Scenes for Collective Creation, curated by Maria Berríos and Sabel Gavaldon, gathers materials that reference genealogies of collective creation and artistic solidarities of the present, invoking the living memory of what is to come. The project is structured around an intensive public programme – talks, conversations, poetry, live art and live radio – that seeks to turn the museum’s exhibition space into a public agora over a period of six weeks.

It includes audiovisual works, publications, graphic work and archival materials from more than fifty artists and collectives. These materials form constellations around specific case studies (militant cinema, community video and cooperative printing, among others) while exploring alliances and solidarity networks across time and geographies: the Algiers Pan-African Festival (1969), the International Museum of Resistance (1973-89), the International Art Exhibition for Palestine (Beirut, 1978), to the emergence of new forms of activism and cultural agitation around the HIV/AIDS crisis that highlights how all illness is political.
