About the MACBA Collection

The MACBA Collection’s mission is to disseminate contemporary art by gathering and conserving a representative set of works which are to offer a multiplicity of viewpoints and be capable of generating comprehensive critical debate.

The MACBA Collection is made up of works created by Catalan, Spanish and international artists, mostly from the period spanning 1960 to the present. The collections cover a wide range of artistic techniques and materials including painting, sculpture, drawing, collage, assemblage, objects, installations and audiovisual and sound recordings, among others.

Over the course of 2022, 150 new works were added to the MACBA Collection. Among them are works by Francesc Abad, Onofre Bachiller, Erick Beltrán, Miguel Benlloch, Alfons Borrell, Mari Chordà, Lúa Coderch, Colita, Mirtha Dermisache, El Palomar, Teresa Estapé, Alicia Fingerhut, FOTORAMBLAS, Coco Fusco, Miguel Gallardo, Dora García, Grup de Treball, María Teresa Hincapié, Lluís Hortolà, Allan Kaprow, Alicia Kopf, Teresa Lanceta, Marika, Max, Jordi Mitjà, Aurèlia Muñoz, Clàudia Pagès, Mabel Palacín, Antònia del Río, Eulàlia Rovira and Adrian Schindler, Marta Skockzeń, Teresa Solar Abboud, Mariel Soria Miranda i Andreu Martín i Farrero, Sinéad Spelman, Pedro Torres, Oriol Vilanova, Oriol Vilapuig and Jaume Xifra.

The diffusion of the Collection is one of MACBA’s priorities for publicising its artists and their practices. In 2022, more than 900 works were loaned to 32 national and international destinations, thus reaching a wider public, more locations and different contexts.

The MACBA Collection has always been present in the museum’s galleries since it was opened in 1995. Since then different presentations of the Collection have been made, showcasing different selections of works from the museum’s holdings and in turn offering new discourses and perspectives on art from the local and international scenes.

Museum’s collections are made up of works from various sources which, over the years and since its establishment, can vary. Here we explain how the MACBA Collection has been set up.
Scholars and researchers can access the works of the Collection. Contact the Collection department, and we will study the feasibility of the request. In some cases there may be associated costs arising from the handling and packaging of the works.
